Preparing wood before staining: the complete guide

Why preparation matters

Preparation largely determines the end result. On well-prepared wood, stain adheres better and lasts longer.

New untreated wood

  1. Sand with 120 grit sandpaper
  2. Remove dust
  3. Let dry completely
  4. Apply base coat

Previously stained wood

  1. Clean the wood
  2. Lightly sand with 180 grit
  3. Remove dust
